Model of Dad's aircraft issued

Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:47 pm

A few years ago, I commissioned artist Stephen Mudgett to do a number of paintings of my Dad's aircraft over his Navy career:
-- An F6F-3 of VF-19 in 1944
-- An F8F-1 of VF-19 in 1947
-- An F9F-2 of VF-61 in 1951
-- An FJ-4B of VA-23 in 1959
and Stephen has those, along with many others, on his web site at

http://www.stephenmudgett.com/products.html

and now a Chinese die-cast model company has issued a model of the F9F-2 with identical markings to the ones in Stephen's profile.

While I did quite a bit of research to make the profile as accurate as possible (i.e., used a BuNo of an aircraft in my father's log books), in 1951 the VF-61 "Jolly Rogers" had about 1/3 dark blue and 2/3 aluminum finish aircraft and I did not have a BuNo to modex equation, so Stephen and I just made it up. Now it'll be enshrined as "history" since if you see it on the internet, it must be so...

Anyway, very cool to have this little tribute to my Dad on the market!

Greetings Llarry I would like to follow in your footsteps for my dad's aircraft as well. You have a great idea. Would you mind if I contact Stephen Mudgett as well? I'm trying to do research on my father's Navy flying career as well. I have many open spaces to try to fill. But I do have some good photos to work with. Would you mind PMing me with Stephen's contact info.

Thanks

Mark

Wanna buy a llama? :D Actually it is just a hobby for us. If I were to figure it all out with cost versus sales, I think it would work out to maybe five bucks an hour -- that is, five bucks an hour that it costs me to have llamas! On the plus side, shoveling manure is therapeutic...

PM sent.

For Hellcat or anyone else who has thought of doing something like this, I can highly recommend Stephen Mudgett. I was very happy with what he did for me.

Well, has Sgt Joker said you're in a world of sh*t.
We must get together one of these days and go see Bruce Williams.

Appreciate the feedback. The list price on these puppies is like $80  and it looks like the cheapest they can be found is $60+, which seemed awfully pricey. So you think the quality is pretty good?
