Jack,

Did Mr. Brown ever say if the squadron got any flak from their superiors for the nose art? I know it was a rarity in USN/USMC .

On the day Carl downed 5 planes after being hit and wounded. He
landed on another CV the Task Group CO saw the artwork and ordered it removed!
VF-27 was fortunate in having Bardshar has its CO. He was a lead from the front type of guy and was more interested in results that making sure your gig line was straight. A lot like Tom Blackburn!

If I remember correctly, the nose art was only on for a very short period. And now it is famous forevermore! Take that, you stuffy admirals!

Nice pictures Jack, thanks for sharing. Further to the Hellcat theme, just wondering if anyone out there may have some images of a VF-32 Hellcat, particularly that of Hollis H. Hills, I believe he flew one with the No.5 on the tail during 1944. Also hoping for a pm with an image at 300ppi possibly 5x7 or 8x10. Fingers crossed.
Thanks
