Thanks muddyboots. :D My uncle Don said he remembers them flying doing mock-dogfights in the dead of winter. He seemed amazed at the guys that would do that in an open cockpit during the winter. Indeed a breed of pilots we will never see again. :cry:

I remember a couple of films from the National Air Races at Cleveland in the 30's. The 1st featured P-26's and the 2nd was P-36's later in the 30's. Many (dozens) did flybys in a line. They started at higher altitude and weaved around until finally landing all one after another in line. Quite incredible.

I can't say that this is true of the P-26 but I have read a number of pilot reports of open cockpit aircraft that mention not being affected by the slipstream while in the cockpit. It probably depends on the size and configuration of the windshield and the cockpit cut out and turtle deck.

A few Zero's where downed by PAAC P-26's on December 8th I beleive. Can you just imagine a P-26 downing a Zero? :supz:
