That's a nice photo, but incorrect caption.

classic shot of a ki 45 toryu nick. the japanese were really hard pressed against the b-29 high altitude onslaught.

i recall that shot was taken over japan, & the nick fighter was attempting to ram the b-29.

It looks like he came VERY close. A lot of their AC had big trouble with the speed and altitude that the B-29s came in at, making them very hard to control. Most of their aircraft couldn't even reach altitude in time once alarms had been sounded.

Didn't we have a thread a while back on this photo being faked (the Nick and B-29 dimensions where not correct?)

And how can you miss a B-29? If the photo is true, the Nick would I think have been firing on the B-29 and then dived in front of it. Would the Nick have been firing at the cockpit or engines?

Hmmm, the Nick does indeed look to be about 30% too small against the B-29. There are some ghostie bits around the edges of the B-29 that could indicate a clever "darkroom manipulation"

Tell me it ain't so...Life Magazine Cheating on the truth! Journalistic integrity, right up there with military intelligence!

It is probably a 7/10ths Nick, like the 7/10ths Mustangs and Stuka that are out there. Probably has a Lycoming or Continental in it.
