I remember seing in a book sometime ago a pic of a P-40 with the drop tank mounted backwards, in North Africa I think. Does anybody know why this was done?

Ya it was a 80th FG P-40N. It's just backasswards

There is a pic of this bird in the Squadron Signal "P-40" in action book and it is featured in the cover artwork as well.
