I can't remember what it is, but it was in a mystery plane quiz in Flight Journal a few years back. It was either Russian or French, but I don't remember exactly which type of aircraft is was.

Looking at the canopy my guess would be Russian. Yak?

That an inverted inline?

Is that more of a wood construction from the canopy back?

With the long prop shaft it appears to have had a counter-rotating prop.

Either the engine is rotated 90 degrees to the right or it has four banks of cylinders?

AHA! It's a Sud-Est SE-580.

Note the original post: "Looks like it has an X or H-24 engine."

From Saabmeister's link:
Initially designed to be powered by the 24-cylinder Hispano Suiza 24Z (H type) of 2,000hp, its postwar redesign accommodated the 24-cylinder arsenal 24 H of 3,400hp. This latter engine used the cylinder blocks of the German Junkers IV12 213 engine. Two 12.1-foot-diameter coaxial, counter-rotating propellers were to be utilized for propulsion.
