Well you'd not get a point on any TV quiz show I've heard of. ;)

Care to tidy up and win anyone?

There's a point floating for 'where'.

Nope!

Interesting that it's on public display at a well known American aviation museum...

BUMP

OK, who is going to knock this one over so we can move onto the next?

NMUSAF in Dayton. In the Early Years gallery.

I think I've got it!

It's in the Smithsonian and is a section of the famous Nitfunkler Invention (usually abbreviated to NFI) used for calibrating windsocks. It was created by Capt. Charles Nitfunkler for the USAF just after the war. The USAF had NFI for many years, and in the opinion of some, they still do. The object was to be able to calibrate and therefore change the settings on windsocks at USAF air bases so invading Russian bombers wouldn't know which way the wind was going and would be embarrassed by making poor crosswind landings. What the USAF didn't know was that the Soviet Air Force also had NFI thanks to an excellent espionage program.

So, that's my guess ... NFI

Very amusing.

However if someone (anyone, please!) looked at what's in front of them, they'd get it like that. Most of the answer's been given (and it's not NFI) and there was a photo of an aircraft outside this very museum in a next-door thread, earlier...

C-82 wind tunnel model?

Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:23 am

Hey James,

I'm really thinking it's the wind tunnel model for the Howard XF-11.

Lookin' at pictures of the XF-11 and comparing it with the image you posted I can't think of what it wouldn't be.

The length of the nacelles looks right, and the curves and lines of where the wings attach to the fuselage look right too.

So?

Cheers,

David

OK, Dave's got it. (Apologies for the delay - the photos were, of course, on the other computer..)

It's a 1/12 scale wind tunnel model of the Hughes XF-11.

Anyone going to tell us where it is?
