How could such an ugly airplane beat out the Boeing Model 299, crash or not?

For me, it still one of the top aircraft I'd like to see restored to flying condition. Yeah it's kind of ugly, but I like it. I think the hardest decision would be, blunt nose or shark nose.

The straight B-18 model had the blunt nose. The B-18A had the long glass nose. The second photo in Jacks post is a B-18A converted to a B-18B with radar/anti-submarine equipment.

I too like the B-18.
