Red Bull P-38

Most of you WIXers will flame me for this one, but WTF .... The Red Bull P-38 is a masterpiece, nothing has been spared in the restoration, top notch all the way from inside to outside, A work of art, but I'm just not into the scheme. No one cares what I think and that's fine, but I hate the mirror look and "red bull' nonsense. Sorry its just me, and yes I know it's not my plane and the owner can do what he wants, but I am a member here on WIX, so I do have a point of view. Even if it's a small one .... P-51 HJGB gives you all an idea of where I like to see warbirds go. You sit those two side by side and I'll take HJGB everytime, no matter what the effort and money each varie. No disrespect to the restorers. And make that clear. I'm not bashing anyone. And yes the red bull P-38 looks close to the XP-38 ... but not really. Flame away. My skins tougher these days.


PS ... Anyone have a better scheme they would like to see on that Red Bull flying mirror?

I care what you think big guy! It'd be cool to see a P-38 painted up like Tommy McGuire's airplane. In the early jet era, it was common to see the bare polished finish. I have a soft spot for the polished early jets since the F-89s my dad flew were finished that way. I got to see P-51 HJGB at Oshkosh and it was just unbelievable. You really have to see it firsthand to appreciate the attention to detail. Hard to imagine another restoration coming close to matching that one.

Paul, you better shine up that T33 like a mirror and go shopping for an XX small flight suit ... haha ... One way or the other, you'll need one ... wink!!!!!

BTW ... what else are you checked to fly and what have you flown? F86 possibly? and any WW2 aircraft cockpit time?

Or just that simple old T33? .... Hell I can fire that one up and loop it a few times!!!! .... right!!!!! .... haha

Right now I'm current in the Boeing 767-400, Super Decathlon and T-33 and soon a Fairchild PT-26. As far as warbird/military aircraft, I've previously checked out in the T-37, T-38 and C-130. I've got stick time in a few other warbirds. See ya soon.

The only question I would have, is how would you paint her? She's not stock by any means. HJGB looks the part. Put the Red Bull 38 in any markings and they wouldn't fit.

What she wears is at least semi close to the early 38s which she somewhat looks like with the intakes such as they are etc.

Had they taken her back to stock P38L with all the guns, armor plate, etc then I'd have a tougher time with how she looks.

No scheme would look right since despite the shiny metal, she doesn't look stock military at all.

I think red bull's P-38 matches more closely with a P-322. I'd say paint her up in correct olive drab with state side training markings and large yellow buzz numbers on the nose! woohoo! But I still think its a bitching P-38!

Mark, I'll go one step further than you and say that I really don't much care for the airplane. It gets an A on workmanship, but about a D on accuracy, which matters more to me. I consider it the least interesting and attractive of the P-38s currently flying. Then again, it is a P-38, so there's still plenty to like about it. And of course, you know what they say about opinions.

IIRC, none of the Red Bull aircraft have any type of military paint scheme.

Back to the Red Bull P-38, indeed I agree that of all the flying examples, she is not sitting with me well for some reason, but she is, I believe, the most amazing restoration of any warbird out there. It would be a very difficult decision for me to chose between GG and Red Bull if given the chance to pick one or the other. GG has so much history and the restoration is first class as well, but GG was returned to it's original condition. (I believe anyway) RB just doesn't look right in so many ways, but has craftsmanship second to none. I've been watching the RB restoration from the beginning and I have never seen such a project so perfect in it's presentation. I wonder who made the decisions to change the areas of RB that are no longer the normal P-38 configuration, and why? I understand no replica guns in the nose, but those intakes?

Just wondering.

RB just doesn't look right in so many ways, but has craftsmanship second to none. I've been watching the RB restoration from the beginning and I have never seen such a project so perfect in it's presentation.

I agree that the workmanship is first class, but really, notwithstanding all the cheerleading, I cannot see that it stands out above GG, or Fagen's, or many of the current crop of warbirds of other types. In other words there are warbirds (including P-38s) that have equally good workmanship AND much greater accuracy, and I give the nod to those.

Well, lets keep in mind that RB has basically always been a show pony. From being first modified for the Bendix races with the early noses and smooth scoops to the last scheme that Lefty flew her in, she has barely worn a military scheme at all.

Also considering that this is pretty much the only '38 that is stll in a Civi scheme is kinda cool. Like a 32 Ford, they all can't be Hot Rods.

Mainly I am just glad there is another one in the air again!
