Search for Judge E. Wolfe info

Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:25 pm

Hi All,

Lately I've been reading into the exploits of the 318th FG while on Ie Shima. I'm specifically looking for any nose art and/or name of the P-47N regularly flown by 333rd Squadron CO and top scorer (9 kills) Judge E. Wolfe. I've already seen a cockpit pic with nine flags...just wondering about nose art.

I honestly don't know if this Jug even carried a name, but would love to find out one way or the other.

Many TIA

Here is a link to the only pic I could find...is it the same as the one you've seen? Shows some more artwork below and in front of the cockpit

Thanks HD. You've got the right aircraft, but I'm looking for details a little bit further toward the greasy end.

The triangular-shaped squadron marking is interesting. The 333rd had nicknamed themselves the "Coral Cobras"--the cobra having a P-39-style cannon protruding from its mouth and a pair of machine guns in the wings. The cobra got modified when the unit was equipped with Jugs, dropping the cannon in the mouth and adding more wing guns.

Keep hunting.

Just a little added intel. Wolfe's first 2 kills were Betty bombers over Iwo Jima in 1944 while flying a P-38L-1.

My dad was in the 333rd down on Canton Island. Most of the personell came from the "Pineapple Air Force" They had P-39's down there. He ran the Propellar barn. He came from the 46th Pursuit at Wheeler Field Hawaii.

Ken,

You may want to start a new thread for this.

I believe you mean 320 BS, 90 BG, 5 AF.

Attaboy, Jack! Cool pic.

Now just find me that bubble-topped, clip-winged "N" pic, and I'll write your name in on my ballot next month (unless you don't want the job)! :D
