I'll agree with Mike's supposition. Looks like maybe a factory shot to me. Note the tail gear tied down for engine runs(?).
Were P-47's being turned out in Dallas as well during the early 1950's? That's the only factor in the photo that doesn't make sense to me.

That's a toughie 
Can you make out the Bureau Number of the plane in your original photograph? It's just above the number "8" on the tail. Without an N-number present, I'm guessing it's an active service US Navy aircraft. Note the very unique "VF" markings on the tail, but no reference to a squadron number. Another excellent photo Ken.

Glenview NAS carried a "VF" tail code on thier aircraft, but usually in larger letters. This being a pre-47 insignia, who knows??

Looks like it's in the first batch of BuNo #'s 80764-82177. The others starting with a 96xxx or 97xxx. Possibly BuNo. 8172?

BuNo.81729 would make it the 965th F4U-4 produced. The history card will tell the squad. That card matched with that background should give a pretty good idea which unit carried those markings. I've never seen that flash on an F4U before.
