Marion Carl Memorial Vandalized

By Lindsey Kovacevich

A memorial at the Roseburg Regional Airport was vandalized over the weekend, and a cash reward has been offered to catch and convict those responsible.

The Marion Carl Foundation built the memorial in honor of Major General Marion Carl after he was murdered in a home invasion robbery more than a decade ago on North Bank Road near Glide.

Carl was an aviation giant and war hero, flying missions in three different wars.

The chairman of the foundation, Ernie King, received a call Monday morning about the damage to the memorial site.

"They saw the light was out, and of course its very shocking to see the sign gone. Then they could see it was pulled loose in the back and they tried to pry that out. There is an insert there of Marion Carl, it's a bronze likeness of him with a record of his accomplishments and achievements while he was a marine aviator. It is worth a quit a bit of money. They tried to get it out and couldn't get it loose."

King estimates the damage is over $5,000.

Bill Woods, who now owns Western Wings, donated the sign when he was the owner of Global Signs. He is offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

"A couple of kids will not go to space camp because of this vandalism. I think its more than vandalism, I think it's the result of trying to make money."

If you have any information or leads on who may of done this, call the Roseburg Police Department at 673-6633.

Is Jesse Faunus (sp?) still on death row for Carl's
murder or has justice been done?

I can fly there, take my pistol in, shoot the guy in the head, then have a quick lunch and fly home. I'll foot the bill for the entire cost and I'll even include the cost of the bullets rather than charge his family the .13 cents like the Chinese do when they carry out justice (or oppress their free thinkers, your choice)

THAT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!!!!
Probably some crack head trying to get sixty cents for the bronze medalion-

if the plaque was made of bronze or copper, then the "thief" was ptobably a crack or meth head/ or someone with an extensive criminal record trying to make ends meet. In many graveyards across the county, these low-lifes are stealing anything bronze and taking it to the scrap dealer. We see it all the time.

This is the most recent appeal in Fanus's case I could find:

I just love it when the courts get it right! It is a very long opinion, but having worked in the District Attorney's office, I know the ridiculous claims these scumbags make. I am thankful that the state seems to have gotten everything right the first time. From reading the opinion I feel confident his date with the needle is getting closer.

As for the vandalism, there are not punishments severe enough for this kind of act. For starters, I would make the culprits learn everything available about WWII, and our hero's then after they serve a stiff jail sentence make them pass a test on WWII, and the sacrifices that were made to ensure their sorry butts were protected, before they are released!

The solution is large catapults and a well constructed brick wall.
