Looking for information on a mid-air collision between two Corsairs (1945?) one of which crashed on Mt. Tamalpais. Some remains still there.
I was told the other Corsair came down in the Pacific.

I can tell you about you. Ltjg Bill "Beeds" Popp of VF-84 was rammed by his wingman over S. Cal in 1944. His wingman was killed but "Beads" bailed with minor injurues. I can find the date for you. VF-84 was formed from former VF-17 Jolly Roger personnel with Roger Hedrick has CO. They were based, I think, at North Island

This must be a different incident. Mt. Tamalpais is north of San Francsico.

May 9, 1944 just N of Escondito. LTjg Beads Popp and Ens Paul Bucher of VF-84 out of North Island.
Bucher was a former NAP and was a very agressive flier. His favorite position in formation was with the left wingtip between theleader
s wing's trailing edge and stab's leading edge. In fact he had hit Bill's F4U a couple of time previous. During some ACM he lost Bill in the sun but continued up instead of breaking off. He cut Bill's F4U in half and went in with his. 60 years later Bill got a call from a member of the Bucher family accusing him of murder then they hung up!

pb4y-2@sbcglobal.net as he has quite a database for WWII era crash sites. He too lives N. California.
