Fri Sep 19, 2008 2:33 pm

Well...that is what Bonham's website is saying although I wonder if it REALLY did sell?

woo hoo another plane for air racing!

Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:06 pm

...lets stick a Napier Sabre engine on this one....

Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:51 pm

A Sabre??!

Well....there's an interesting suggestion. Slightly challenging engineering, though!

Holy cow!!!

Wow.

I was looking at bidding on this, but thought it easily would have gone for 10 times what it sold for - so decided to look in other directions. I just had no idea it would go that low.

Makes you wonder if we will see other project prices start to drop or is this was just a freak auction that everyone passed on.

Kinda feel bad for the seller as they must be very disappointed and wishing they had put a reserve price on the auction.

Sure wish i had been there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the winner should inquire about a sponsorship:
:drinkers:
The first record for ‘BW 853’ shows that RCAF Eastern Air Command took charge of the aircraft on 17th December 1941 when it was assigned to 118(F) Fighter Squadron at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which looked after various Hurricanes and Sea Hurricanes, both Canadian and UK built. The squadron C/O was S/L Molson, a member of the famous Molson brewing family who was also a Senator and wrote about his experiences to the vendors. He was a veteran who had served in the Battle of Britain with the RCAF Montreal auxiliary squadron and, interestingly, crashed during the Battle of Britain just three miles away from where ‘BW 853’ has resided for the past 19 years. There is the correspondence on file from him relating to ‘BW 853’.

There's some connection between Molson and beer? Do tell.

More than just a connection, James. More like synergy.

Add a platter of Oka cheese on the side and you've got yourself a party.

Nay, more than a party...you've achieved the essence of Canada itself.

Oh wait, what was the question?

From Wikipedia:

Molson specific brands in Canada and the United States include Molson Canadian (lager), Molson Canadian Light, Molson Ice, Molson Golden, Molson Export (ale), Molson Dry, Molson XXX, Stock Ale, Pilsner, Carling, Tornade, Bohemian and Calgary. In Brazil, Molson owns partial stakes in the Brazilian brands A Marca Bavaria and Kaiser, after acquisitions and disposals in 2000, 2002 and 2006. As of January 2006, Molson has a 15% stake and a board seat in Cervejarias Kaiser the company responsible for Kaiser.[3] Molson also brews Fosters Lager under licence for the United States and Canadian markets. Molson has the marketing and selling rights for Corona brands, marketing and selling rights for Heineken in Canada and markets and sells Miller brands in Canada. Beginning in 2007, Molson Coors announced a joint venture with Miller's parent to create MillerCoors, which handles production and distribution for both companies' American brands.

Fosters, Heineken, Coors....they kinda are the beer company here! :drinkers:

Tells you all you need to know. :drinkers: :vom:

Mass produced moose and kangaroo wee.

Back on topic, how much Hurricane and how much messing around by a 'rebuilder' were you getting?

From what I understood, what you saw in the photos was all that was in the auction. No wings, no tail feathers - just a bare fuselage.

Just the same, I think someone went to bed tonight with a pretty big grin on their face. Perhaps the deal of the decade - simply amazing. Now who knows how high the bidding would have gone if another interested party had been there bidding...I certainly get the impression only one serious bidder was there. A very lucky person - whoever they are.

Hey I totally agree. The winning bidder got a fantastic deal. Had I known about it I would have bid as well. My museum's got a centre section of a Hurricane but in far worse condition than that, and much less complete.

I hope that will ALL the money the buyer saved, he/she will restore it all nice like.
