Warbirds in Winona, MN

Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:24 pm

. . . or, what is left of them:

Winona, MN:

I routed through Winona yesterday, and visited the Max Conrad Airport there.

The Technical School has discontinued their Aviation program. From what I understand, the aircraft were sold to someone in the same airfield.

Last time I saw these airplanes (in 2000), they were indoors [inside the hangar that can be seen in the background in a couple of the pictures] and were in general terms, in good shape. I recall for example, the USCG HH-?? helicopter to be a complete airframe, with all the instruments and parts in place.

The Cessna 305-A is in a sorry state. The instrument panel is gutted, and so is the interior, but it is not that far gone, that some $$ and lots of TLC could not bring it back to flying.

The T-33 is showing the effects of time and weather . . . and so is the Hiller.

Amazing Tulio!

Thanks for taking the pics. I can't believe that they are all just sitting outside now. That T-33 was in really good shape the last time I looked at it. I wish the canopy was closed on it.

I wonder if they still have the F-84 engine laying around there somewhere. The guys at Cavanaugh's should try to make contact since they own the F-84 it came out of. I tried to get it to go with the 'Streak but was unsuccessful. Maybe the new owners might be interested in selling/donating it now.

I want that T-33!

It was good seeing you again this weekend.

Steve, Lisa, and the kids

Steve, I believe that the engines are outside, too, with lots of assorted airplane junk.

It was great seeing you too, and it was a very distinct pleasure and honor, to meet your wife and wonderful kids.

Thank you for your hospitality!
