Congrats to John Lohmar. John just won the Silver in the T6 "Race 28" at Reno! This is John's second year and he won the Bronze and Rookie of the Year last year. Congrats.

That T-6 is an sentimental favorite to me; it is the one I learned to fly in. Well, not quite, it is not the airplane that I took my first lesson as a private pilot in, but it is the one where I started my warbird flying experience. This was 25 years ago when John Hess owned it and I met him at the Breckenridge show. He agreed to teach me and we moved over to Perrin, and spent two days doing a checkout. It was very hot. John was a fine instructor, and he even let me solo his plane. So I headed home after that with the basic training to begin flying the Spitfire.
I saw the plane at Reno, it looked familiar so I spoke to the owner and sure enough that was the one. Congratulations.

Congratulations John! That's great news! I should also say congratulations and job well done to the crew who put the bird back together. I almost took a photo of John's racer three weeks ago but I was afraid I might jinx the project. Wings off, tanks out, tail feathers off, engine off, etc etc. Incredible that you guys got that thing back together! Bronze and Rookie Of The Year in 2007, Silver this year, so I guess that means Gold next year?

I think a lot of congrats goes to crew chief Gary Unruh, who worked MANY long, hard and often lonely days and nights to get this plane ready to race.

You are right - We would not have even made it to Reno this year if it were not for Gary Unruh, Les Heikkila, and Mike Rawson. They are all great guys, good friends and all went above and beyond in order to help me get the plane ready. All I had to do was the easy part - "Fly Low, Fly Fast, and Turn Left".
