I was just talking to his Son Mike at Reno yeaterday and bought a print from him which also included that photo and a copy of his logbook entry. And in that shot you can see what a real combat airplane paint job looked like, lot's of wear and tear, not Oshkosh pretty.

Notice the inboard cannon fairing looks empty, like it is broken off? Myabe it is just the light, or it is taped over crudely. Obviously those invasion stripes were slapped on pretty quickly under the wing.
