Whatever it was, it must have caused excessive fuel consumption...

It didn't cause excessive fuel consumption - just trying to gain more ram air for racing.

Looks like it came from a T6...

Man, I had a 71 GTX with the Six Pack motor in 1979 that I sold for 2000 bucks

Oh man. You can buy the hood for that much now. :)

My mistake. I thought he was only trying to ruin the looks of the aircraft.

I wouldn't complain, in 1979 $2000 was top buck for that GTX........

Now, the Hemi I blew up in the 69 Charger and replaced with a 440 was another story. I bought the car for $1200. Got the replacement engine a few weeks later for $300 . They offered me $50 for the hemi in trade. I put the junked Hemi in a shed on the farm. I sold the non running engine with a hole in the block in the late 1990 for $6500. Now that is scary.....

Of course now, those cars are worth a "lot" (I think supply finally caught up with demand and the new "tribute cars" and the prices are coming back down as fast as they went up).....

Mark, I guess that's how some Warbird owners feel too.I am sure a lot of them who sold them in the 70's are saying the same thing. $$$$

Last time I saw the remains of that a/c was in the late Elmer Ward's hangar at Chino over a decade ago.

Maybe if he didn't have the scoop he would'a seen the ditches? Seriously though, I don't think I'd want to try land an F8F off-field.

I seem to recall that Sliker ran out of fuel as he tried to land. He then tried to bounce the a/c from the embankment up onto the runway, but ended up knocking his gear straight into it. He flipped upside down and cartwheeled down the runway.
