And just in case you're wondering, I don't really want to be up this late, but we were calling some friends in Alaska, so I was trying to do some research at the same time...

Now for some serious shut-eye!

My dad was there at the time. A few days later they were flown to Ford Island and loaded onto jeep carriers. The planes with the white bands are the 73rd squadran and the opposite side are the 19 squadran. The 19FS were hoisted onto the USS Natoma Bay and the 73rd were hoisted onto the USS Manila Bay. On about the 23rd of June they were catapulted off the deck to join the fighting on Saipan. The 333rd FS followed on the USS Sagent Bay arriving July 18th.[b] I don't know how to link but there is a clip of the 73rd FS P-47s being launched on youtube. Seach USS Manila Bay. Hugh

Ryan, the pics of the P-47s were seen by Ken Wilson who is writing a book on P-47s. I received an e-mail from him about possible use in a new book he is writing....

Were these from your private collection or something like that? Would Ken be able to get in touch to possibly use them in his book? Those were some really nice shots....Any help would be appreciated.

They are available at a public site from the National Archives - the problem is you have to figure out where they are. A lot of them are not very well organized or captioned.
I'd be glad to point him in the right direction... There are more there than I posted. Sometimes when my family is having a long discussion, or a long phone conversation with friends in Alaska, I browse through and look for interesting stuff - like this.

Footnote for some reason just kills my computer when I try to download so I've given up. The photos also apprear dark or murky.
The photo of the B-29 Ryan posted the other day is that way. I've got a copy of it but got it myself at the NA and it's crystal clear.
