Very nice Jack - that would be an FJ-4B Fury. Any chance you can make out the BuNo on your original scan?

Thanks! Mark

It's an FJ-4 not an FJ-4B. Most obvious difference is the lack of the second set of speed brakes under the aft fuselage. In general, if it's a Marine airplane, it's the FJ-4 fighter. If it's a Navy airplane, it's the FJ-4B attack airplane, produced as a backup to the A4D...

This photo is in Ginter's book on the FJ-4/4B and the aircraft is identified as buno 139316. (It's not any more readable in that print, though.)

By the way, has there ever been a US military aircraft in Japan that did not fly by Mt Fuji for the obligatory snap? Do they have, like, traffic lights up there or something? Must be crowded on photogenic days...

I agree- this is FJ-4, B model have very notable air brake in rear lower fuselage. And this subject come as direct hit for me as well i just work on the color profiles of this plane. FJ-4 and FJ-4B... If any of you have more archive images I would be happy if you can display them. Sorry but i have nothing in my collection about this plane.

Detail of interest is that this plane have no in flyght refueling boom under the port wing.

Cheers :P

Is it just me or does the later model Fury just look so much better than the F-86.

I don't think it's JUST you, but I highly doubt that most people think that the FJ-4 and FJ-4B Furys are better looking than most of the F-86 Sabres.

Personally, I think the FJ-3 and FJ-3M were the best looking of the Fury models.

As far as the Sabres go, I like the looks of the F-86H and F-86D/L Sabre Dogs the most, but I think the F-86A/E/F Sabres are great looking jets.

I am sure everyone has their opinions on the Sabre and the Fury. I really enjoyed seeing Rich Sugden's FJ-4B fly a few years back and would love to see it again.
