Spanish Heinkels - Casa 2.111

Wed Jul 16, 2008 9:51 am

Can anybody please give me the current state of play with the Spanish Heinkels Casa 2.111 in the US.

I assume there are none still flying, but are there any restorations or plans underway?

Many thanks.

Peter.

Cavanaugh's is, I believe, under deep maintenance / rebuild.

Paul Allen has one, still in storage in the UK.

The CAF one was destroyed in a crash some years back.

That's it, AFAIK

The NMUSAF's is still in storage(last I saw), still in BoB film paint. I was lucky to get close to it when they were reorganizing the hangars and parked it out front. No pictures I'm afraid. I really wish they would put it on display. Even as it is.

When I worked at the museum in 94 I remember seeing the CAF's 111 and a B-17 (not sure which one, my attention was on the Casa) in formation .....Strafe? :D / buzz the museum. Beautiful sight!!!

It sure would be nice to see the NMUSAF's example on display one day.

Id love to see at least a few more in the air. What happened to the 30 some odd examples after the BoB movie? I know almost all the ones mentioned here already are such examples, but thats only a few!

I bet there's some storage yard in Spain with a few Casa 2.111's still to be found!

Maybe someone from Cavanaugh can pipe in here, but I thought I had heard that the plans of restoration to flying condition of their example changed after the CAF's crashed. I thought that it was going to remain static indefinitely.

That's what I'd heard as well. Mr. C. was worried that his bird would be the last airworthy example and didn't want to risk such a rare aircraft overall.

A few months ago, I was hanging around Dan Webb's bookstore in Oakland (a great place). One of the customers told us about the time, back in '74, when he was changing planes on the Canary Islands. He looked out the window of the terminal and saw numerous CASA 2.111s and HA-1112s lined up, waiting to be scrapped. According to his story, the Canary Islands were the end of the line for the '40's-era Spanish warbirds.

Can anyone corroborate?

Given the large number that were made available to the makers of Battle of Britain in 1967, and the number of Buchons still extant (including those in store with Connie Edwards), I wouldn't say so.

I haven't read my Robert Rudhall books in a while, but I think Tablada was where most of the Buchons were found by the film-makers, already dismantled and awaiting the scrapman. Long story short, they got most, if not all, of them. All but two of the Heinkels were leased to the film company by the Spanish AF, but two were bought and, I think, still survive.

Tell me more please - I work in Alameda and haven't heard of this place.

I clipped this off the top of a rather nice Buchon shot at Tablada, taken by one of the film company photographers.

It shows 11 Heinkels together with one Ju52 in the background.
