Who "owns" P-51Mustang design?

Fri Jul 04, 2008 4:24 pm

Obviously, NAA owned it at one time and did transfer it to Trans Florida/Cavalier. Was this permanent ortemporary? Gets less clear with Piper Enforcement involvement. Boeing currently claims ownership via a line of corporate aquisitions etc, as I understand it, insisting model companies get permision to issue kits.

Since parts drawings have been available from DOD (and now the Smithsonian) for quite few years, is the basic design now condsidered in the public domain?

Does Boeing support today's rebuild's of "their" product? If they indeed own it ,is there any liability for support/non-suport in technical matters???

Cal Pacific Airmotive owns the civilian type certificate as of last year. Although that is different than the rights to the actual design, the rights and LTC were consolitated under Cavalier, so I have to wonder if both were sold together.
