Restored P-38 Dive brakes

Wed Jul 02, 2008 5:46 pm

Do the few P-38's flying today still have the electric speed brakes fitted? I'm not sure if I heard this right or not but I just heard something a second ago on tv (Showdown: Air Combat) that suggested that the POF P-38 no longer has them installed.

???

Jack Erickson's does. Don't know for sure about Jack Croul's but can ask Jeff Harris.

...I think i was one of the few who knew how to lower them on the ground, and i don't think he ever deployed them in actual flight. I would assume that the new red bull kept them in place.

PoF bird is a J-20 model that might never have had them. I know they were retrofitted to some combat J-10s, 15s and 20s, but we'rent standard until the J-25. Could be since the PoF bird was stateside it never got them.

Never thought of that. That makes sense. Naturally Glacier Girl and the earlier ones wouldn't have had them either.

From Jeff Harris
We have them as does Ron Fagens and Tom Blairs, but ours are not installed as we are missing the castings/brackets that they attach to as well as the actuators to deploy them....
