Rest in peace, and THANK YOU! God, I wish we could have found the fountain of youth for that generation.

If you want to read the best account of the first days on Iwo get his book "GOD ISN'T HERE" it has been called the best and most precise narative of what happened there. The comandant of the 5th marine corps called him and told him that his book was "100%".
He was a corpsman and they went back a couple of years ago. There was this guy following him around who he didn't know. finally the guy came up and asked if his last name was ________ he said yes, and the guy thanked him for saving his life. Of course my father in law didn't remember him because he was one of hundreds that he helped. The guy was hit by machine gun fire and couldn't stand. FIL grabbed him and threw him over his shoulder and ran back to the aid station with him. His face was down and all he could see was FIL's last name on his tag on his chest! They became friends and the guy flew him to texas to meet his whole family etc etc. a happy ending in deed.
Get the book and read it, you will have a better understanding of ground pounders!
