He got his Mach 2 pin in the '58, but not solo. Don't know about the B-47.

J. S. went through B-47 RTU at Barksdale AFB, as did a lot of folks. The building they used for school was later known as the FTD (Field Training Detachment) building by the North Gate. It's now the home of the Barksdale museum. The archives at Barksdale AFB's museum have a bunch of photos of him on base, at the Officer's Club, etc.

A B-58 only has one pilot seat. A TB-25 has a pilots seat and an instructors seat immediately aft of the pilots compartment. He can only communicate via the interphone. The instructor cannot see the pilot, or talk directly to him.

I'd say that the USAF let Jimmy Stewart go for his ride in a TB-58 Hustler. I have no clue if it was front or back seat. If you look closely you can see the differences in the windows.
The first 2 pics are the TB-58 at the former Grissom AFB in Bunker Hill, IN. The last is from the NM USAF in Dayton.

The TB-25 has several more seats...

A related question; is there any hope of Strategic Air Command coming out on DVD? It's one of my favorite aviation films.

There is a petition (of sorts) at the TCM website to get it onto DVD. I'm hoping that happens sometime soon.

Check out ebay as I have a copy on DVD, bootleg naturally:roll: Kind of like the Rat Patrol set I have as well. The cover for The Rat Patrol cover is off the metal lunch box they made many years ago, which I had at one time...

There was an article in Air & Space Mag several years ago that was written by the instructor who got (then) BGen. Stewart his Mach 2 pin. BGen. Stewart flew in the instructor's cockpit for that flight, but I believe that there was mention of an "orientation flight" with him in the front seat for what was basically a flight around the pattern and back to land (although that could just be me incorrectly remembering a movie clip...

Wish Pop was still around. He was a SAC vet flying with the 68th Bombardment Wing out of Chennault in Lake Charles, LA (AC in both B-47's and KC-97's) and then out of Forbes in Topeka in B-47's.
Might have had some info to Vlado's question as I'm sure all those guys had the inside track.
I sure remember B-47 JATO take offs (from the sidelines, of course)
