This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hello everyone.
Below are pictures of a new 1/72 scale diecast P-51B model that just came out.
There has neen much debate on the diecast model forums as to weather the color is correct.
Some say it should have had a olive drap upper surface while others say the aircraft had been painted both gary, OD & finally striped to bare metal during it's time with the Lufwaffe.
I figured with the wealth of knowledge on this forum someone might have more insight on this matter.
Thanks.

Even if the color is correct (which is open to debate) the Luftwaffe certainly wouldn't repaint the US stencils.

Here are a couple of pics from "Strangers in a Strange Land" (Squadron-Signal, 1988.)
The only mention in the text is this:
It is believed that a total of two P-51B and four P-51D Mustangs were operated by the Luftwaffe during WWII. The first Luftwaffe Mustang is beleived to have been captured at Cambrai on D-Day. The aircraft was tested at Rechlin with the Test Center code 8+7. Another Mustang, and olive drab over neutral gray P-51B coded T9+CK, was evaluated at Hannover-Wunstorf during the swummer of 1944. Later the camouflage was removed and the bare metal T9+CK was seen in late 1944 at Paderborn airfield. Another P-51B, coded T9+HK was reported at Orienburg, Rechlin, and Neuruppin. At least two Luftwaffed P-51Ds were repainted in a dark green camouflage and were later recaptured in a derelict condition by U.S. troops in May of 1945.
It seems possible to me the P-51B could have been repainted in a Luftwaffe green, but I rather doubt it.

If I remember correctly, on the Tuskegee Airman episode of Dogfights, of them had a fight with a bare metal/yellow captured P-51B. Any one else remember this episode?

The color photo of "CK" with OD upper surface is in Karl Reis DORA... four volume series (circa 1967).
