Great day in Cowtown!

Sat May 31, 2008 11:08 pm

It was a fun couple of days in Ft. Worth
(for most of us)
1st of all 02lady has a prop problem...I hope you get this thing fixed soon! (Sorry I missed you again! )

There was a good turn out by both spectators and airplanes!
Vintage stuff was a bit light ... but never the less fun stuff.

Modern stuff was cool to see.

Dean was a busy guy!

The B-25 sporting new cowl color.

And the best part of the day...was Rick and company's noise maker...

Great Pictures !
Dose anybody know when Ready for Duty R4D is going to be getting a new paint job ? (She looks Great now !) or is she going to be getting one at all ?

I'll make it home Sunday in a rent car. Will be out to hangar to pick up my car Monday evening. Plane will NOT be back for the wedding...please tell Gerry and Todd. And if you can find a subletter, it probably won't be back fo a while

Long story short......a metal bird or UFO hit the rear prop while it was under full power, on takeoff or enroute. I had no vibration or other indication during 1.5 hr flight.

It's nasty looking and wll require a blade change. For anyone that remembers a similar occurence at 2001 WOH; it took the prop shop 7 weeks to find a pusher blade for me. The OV-10 Assn had two blades in their maintenance room; however, I do not believe either will pass muster to be yellow-tagged. The only good thing about this (unless the prop shop finds something we can't see) this is not considered a prop strike so engine doesn't need to be torn down. Does involve quite a few hours of flight testing and multiple oil changes. Maybe for a short time I can rival Eric D's carbon footprint...LOL

I have quite a few pictures and will try to post some when I figure out how. Well it's the middle of the night and I must sleep. If anyone has a spare blade they would like to give up for the cause............oh in my dreams :P :P

Hopefully when you say "new"...I hope you mean a freshen-up of her Atlantic scheme..very unique against
a field of her OD, NMF and SEA sisters..

Wow, you had a bird strike from behind? You must have been going pretty slow. I thought that only happened to A-10's. :D

LOL.. Yes, it'll be repainted in the same scheme when it gets done. But it'll be in a semi-gloss or gloss version (gasp! ;)) if our Maintenance Office has his way.

If you want to make a donation specifically for the repaint, please do! Just contact Jim Breitenstein or Charlie Wood (or drop by the hangar any Saturday or Sunday) and they'll be more than happy to put it in the fund. Right now the number one priority is to get the R4D's account back up to where it needs to be after the engine replacement. We hope to have that done by the end of this year, so I think you'll see a definite push for the repaint going forward end of this year or next year.

Contact information for the DFW Wing is available on our website - www.dfwwing.com

Zane,

Thanks for the great pictures and the flyby video. I wanted to be there but had my own flying to do. I thought briefly about abandoning my approach to 13R at DFW for an MD-80 flyby at Meacham but good judgement got the better of me.

Karen you still have that blade from Houston in the back of your car. I'll just file it out a little paint and you will be good to go............... or we can hang it up on the wall of shame where it belongs. See you tommorrow. While you were gone we got the T-28 going so he will have to take your place at the wedding.

Gawd...now I'll have two blades in the back of the car.....that's the key...sell the car and I'll never have a destroyed prop again...

Glad to hear about the 28.....did he fly it??? Maybe I can borrow that for my shows <VEG> ......psssttt did ya hear that, Russ.

Thanks for the giggle......when I was flying CAF's YO-55 even seeing medium size birds in the vicinity was scary...I never knew who would win....because they were probably bigger and faster.....so I ducked rather than they.

Re this "strike" in all seriousness it is beginning to look like a piece of metal was kicked up off runway on takeoff. Although the blade is toast, there is probably very little metal mass lost so that may account for the lack of vibration or rpm change enroute.
