The Navy's plan to adapt the B-29 into a submarine got off to a shaky start when the prototype was found to have serious leakage issues. Subsequent testing revealed the airframe was completely inadaptable to the mission, which is pretty much what everyone had said from the beginning. (Except the bureaucrats, who demanded a multi-function asset, able to perform seemingly incompatible tasks.) Surprisingly, the issue was not with the concept itself, but rather with the fact the Navy deemed it impossible to bomb at 20,000 feet from 350 feet below the surface of the ocean. The project was soon abandoned, but not before four crews got soaking wet in a valiant attempt to prove the government does not screw everything up(they failed)

Jack,

Is that Suribachi in the background? Looks as though number four wasn't turning at the time...

Y'all crack me up! Great captions there.

It looks like someone has already been in the gun turret, I assume to "safe" the guns, when this picture was taken.

Flight Engineer to pilot..."So that's what letter is on our tail."

"Despite the fact the tail was able to be folded, the wingspan itself made carrier operations hazardous, and the occasional overshoot of the deck inevitable."

Is that Suribachi in the background?

I'm not sure. This could be airfield #1 but I'm not sure how close to the water it was :?:
