P-51 Mustang Aces Symposium

Tue May 06, 2008 11:02 pm

Went to a P-51 Aces panel talk this past Sunday hosted by the Northern Calif. Friends of the American Fighter Aces Assoc. Held at the Aerospace Museum of CA (ex-McClellan AFB) in Sacramento, we had the pleasure of listening to four aces speak of their experiences in the European Theatre during WWII. Autographs followed their talk.

From left to right
Col. Bud Anderson 16.25 victories (357th FG)
Lt. Col. Don Bryan 13.33 (352nd FG)
Col. Barrie Davis 6 (325th FG)
Col. Art Fielder 8 (325th FG)

Tony Banta also brought his P-51 "Kimberly Kaye" as a backdrop, and one lucky raffle ticket winner won a ride in the plane.

Bud Anderson was at the MOF a couple of weeks ago where I was able to get him to sign my K-14 gunsight, he is a great guy.

Bud ANderson is a true gentleman. I did an interview with him for the NMUSAF, and wanted to get a photo together. He gave me his cell number and told me to call him at the Mustang Gathering to meet up!! A very cool guy for sure.

isn't it funny how those sweet old men were once "stone cold killers"? I hope when I'm their age I look like a mean old barstard, so's I can scare the neighborhood kids! :P

As a grunt I just cannot imagine what it took to sit at the stick of one of those things, point it at another plane, and shoot the tar out of it. I mean, I've had to run out into fire before, but all the crap going on in a cockpit under normal conditions makes my head spin. Those guys did that AND shot the tar out of the other guy! just...WoW!

Nice pictures Roger. These aces' symposiums are really excellent, I've been to a few at Travis and Hiller over the past couple of years.

And I'd echo everyones comments about Bud Anderson, a true gent. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times during his various visits to the UK, and again at the Mustang Gathering, and he always made time for a chat, and was unfailingly polite to those standing in line to get him to sign something.

I would have loved to have been able to go to that!

Col Davis and Col Fielder were both on Dogfights, right? I know for sure Col Fielder was.
