Action at French Valley May 1st

Thu May 01, 2008 7:02 pm

Action at French Valley Airport today as the Collings Foundation wrapped up its last day in Murrieta Calif. For the trip to Long Beach a few little friends flew into French Valley to escort the bombers over the ocean and up to Long Beach. What a treat it was to see all that raw power leaving this small airport.

What beautiful aircraft, and great photos, thank you for sharing them! I especially like the last two.

I think we owe Jack Croul a big thank you. Not only has he and his right hand man Jeff Harris restored a P-38L and a P-51D (with a 2nd to follow) the a/c are flown often and participate in a lot of events.

A few more out of many that I took over the 4 days.

Just wondering, did Jack Croul do the P-38 restoration? Or was it done by a shop at Mojave?
Thx,
VL

He who writes the checks always gets top billing 8)
I can ask Jeff For Specifics but the engine overhauls were the most intreresting.
The bomb racks are works in progress.
BTW Jack Croul flew 30 missions has a B-17 bombardier in the 96th BG and has awarded the DFC 8)

I believe WestPAC did the work. IIRC they disassembled the major structures and used them to build fixtures for (edit) P-38.

it was one heck of a day...had the whole army air force in trail. I couldn't take any photos...was right seating the 24 today. One of our volunteers was in Betty Jane and got some cool shots of the fighters. As soon as I get my camera back from him I will post the shots. We did a 5 ship up the coast and broke off abeam Long Beach. It was alot of work orchestrating all those airplanes. Scotty G was in the T-6 shooting away...
