And I'm sitting here wondering to myself how that happened.

Anyone know? Jack, was there any comment on the photo that explained what happened?

Cheers,

Apparently it had a GREAT autopilot system! State of the art for its time! Lands itself!, sorta like our modern day aircraft.........

Well I tried!

Its the best answer i have. Id say a meteor fell from the sky or a Japanese or kraut plane but no impact marks on the ground in front of it.

I'm guessing a fire.

Perhaps it was an encounter with King Kong or a giant squid.

Well the props weren't turning and they are draining fuel so it looks to me that it is was ready to go, but just as they were towed out, they had a little hanger rash!

They made the mistake of replacing the C-47 props with a set from a B-29, hoping it would make the aircraft faster. They obviously were a little long hence the circumcistic action...

Shoulda just painted flames on it to make it faster- like a car...

Alternate Theory: Tommy Toggle, playing in the cockpit, was heard to say: "What does THIS button do?!" just prior to the cockpit falling off...

Looks like a fire. It looks as though there is some smoke residue on the upper right portion of the bulkhead.

Hit in a Japanese attack on Kweilin, China in 1943.
BTW This reminds me of the famous B-26 Half & Half.

That's pretty crazy how intact the rest of the plane is.
