P-38J 44th FS 18th FG crashed on final at Middleburg Island in Aug 1944 when both engines quit from fuel starvation. I'm guessing this was the sqd's ferry flight originating from Guadalcanal. Note the PBYs anchored off shore of the 2nd ERS (maybe).

Anyone know which squadron those Black Cat PBYs in the background belonged to?...and maybe the identity of the tender?
