Bob Hoover's Rockwell Mustang

Sat Apr 05, 2008 2:37 pm

I am (hopefully soon) going to be building a model of Hoover's Rockwell Int'l Mustang and would love if you guys could post any pictures you may have of it. Cockpit and wheelwell shots would be a plus!

Thanks in advance.

Me with Bob in 1983. What a Wisconsin boy was doing wearing a Cowboys t-shirt i'll never know.

Now that's one heck of a childhood souvenir!!! Ol' Bob looks like he's standing on stilts. He is the embodiment of cool...

What are you using for decals. Red Pegasus?

Well, the easiest version to do would be the "after" version... Just melt some aluminum foil onto the diorama base...

Yes, Occasionally I am evil... lol...

They make nice thin decals and have been happy with the ones i've used so far.

I trust you are aware of the fact that if you want to build one of Bob's own P-51Ds you can't use those N# decals. This is the a/c Leroy Penhall lent Bob for a short while only.

Which decals have you used so far?

OK, I'll bite, what's the background story to this? Not knowing much about the Hoover Mustang except that it was yellow and cool, can I safely assume that one was written off somehow? And that there was more than likely more than just one?

Always been curious about that.

revell did a 1/32 P-51 with Hoover's markings. I have the kit and can scan the decals if you want.

I've got that one too and will likely scan them for the N#.

I don't remember the compete story- I think it is in his book "Forever Flying" (A really great read for the aviator or enthusiast!) I found the pic, but not the story when I quickly glanced through for it- but apparently his Mustang burned up in a ground fire at Marysville, Ohio, in 1984.

That's actually his second Cavalier Mustang. The first was damaged by an O2 bottle explosion.
