Yes, it was outside for alot of years. This is me next to it in 1963. Younger and slimmer.

Comparatively, the H is so much more graceful and sleek than the D...outperforms it, too.

The H does seem a little strange looking, as if the nose is smaller underneath.
I was at AF technical school at Chanute in 1969. What a depressing place that is, especially in dreary weather. A few weekends I went down to the the University of Illinios at Champaign-Urbana to see a few normal folks.
I don't remember the the P-51 there, although there may have been a few planes sitting outside, no one seemed to pay any attention to them.

I think it has something to do with their wee skinny legs Can't argue with the performance figures though.

Just my opinion, but NAA took a nice looking airplane (A to D) and turned it into an ugly duckling.

When I was at Chanute in 1957, the P-51 was near the main chow hall. As you exited the north east door of the chow hall, it was off to your left beside the movie theater.
