That isn't a R-1340 they are looking at. There is more than 1 row of cylinders.
The guy on the lower R/H looks like one of my kids.
Someone talks airplanes and they suddenly find other things to do.

Looks like a mechanic training session to me. The engine appears to be an R-2600 by the prop governor mounting pad.

The instructor is Sgt. Paul F. Brown of Middlebury, Vermont...

Jack,

Kind of a unique Harvard there. This is one of the Noorduyn AT-16s built for the RAF and RCAF on U.S. contract, hence the U.S. serial number. This airplane went to the RAF with a FE*** serial (I can probably confirm the exact number later) and then was given or loaned by the RAF to the USAAC in the Far East. Only about ten or so of these RAF birds ended up back with the USAAC.

Notice is has the long Harvard II canopy and I wouldn't be surprise if it has the Harvard exhaust as well.

Yes, is a Noorduyn AT-16-ND "Harvard IIB"

42-697 has constructionnumber 14-234 and was to be used by the RAF as FE500. Served in Canada as FE500 and was sold to Sweden, postwar, to become Fv16119. Withdrawn from use on March 10, 1970 and scrapped.
