Northern California Mystery Stearman

Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:31 pm

I met a interesting fellow a few years back at the Stearman fly-In at Cottage Grove, OR and was curious if anyone here recalls him or his Stearman. I had some photos but they went up with the house :?
This Stearman had a cowled 300hp Lyc and was silver/blue. It was tired, dirty (well filthy) and looked barnacle encrusted. Really a sorry looking a/c. The motor I was told had never been worked on and had 2500 hrs + on it. This fellow was in his 80s and bent over like a horse shoe and his wife about the same. He said he'd been flying this PT since the early 50s. What was interesting about it was that the front cockpit was removed! I mean empty. It had a piece of plywood and a cushion from a lawn chair and a couple pillows. This was for his wife who was so frail she just layed down there no belt or nothing. Someone's got to remember this fellow and his Stearman   :?:

THANKS, JACK!

Jack,
It's not every day that somebody comes up with the same retirement plan, but it sounds like that guy's on the plan I had. But I WAS going to give the wife a seat belt...

It probably wasn't a "retirement plan", he was probably once wealthy and bought a Skyraider....the rest you can figure out yourself.

Eric,
I'm going for the big retirement account- I've been buying CDO's made up of USN underwater aircraft futures. You wouldn't believe the return...
