Stearman's for Roger Cain (and others) - many photos

Yes Roger, I do realize one of the photos is not a Stearman. You will have to guess which one. These were the Stearmans at the Cactus Fly-In last Saturday

Thanks Bill, for all of the GREAT pics of my favorite bird. (Yes, I love the little PT-19 too). I appreciate you posting these as well as the good shots of the H model P-51 in your other Cactus Fly-In post.

It's slowly getting warmer up here in northern Wisconsin. We are definitely getting anxious for the airshow season to start up here. Your pics help in the anticipation....

Having flown in one of those Fairchild PT-19's earlier this summer, that was too easy

Can you solo a PT-19 from the back? I've always found a Stearman so much easier to fly from the back seat.

Yep Dan, you sure can. You don't have any real weight and balance issues. Supposedly you are to fly solo from the front cockpit only because that is where the fire extinguisher is mounted. I have talked to lot's of guys that have flown them solo from the rear seat.

And for N3NJeff, the N3N is very cool too. For some reason (like the Fairchild PT's), they don't get the attention they deserve. One positive side effect of this for the Fairchild's is that buying parts for them is a lot easier on the pocketbook and makes the PT-19, '-23, '-26 series a much more economical Warbird for us folks that are in those lower income brackets.

Since I haven't messed around with the N much, I'm not sure what the parts pricing situation is like, but I know that it always seems to hurt when I buy a Stearman part.

I'm not sure but I think N2S-1 N50052 was my father's first Stearman. I have not seen it since I left AZ in 1992. Great to see it again.

As far as the parts situation. Nobody is making repo parts for the N like the stearman. But that being said. There is not too much that is hard to find. There are still reasonable projects out there. The only problem is if you want the N3N to be stock. Bendix 30x5's, the full lengith blades for the Hamilton standard prop and the Wright 760-8 are worth their weight in gold because of all the travel aire guys using them up as replacements for the J-5. My uncle is about to retire from his job and was thinking about tackling a N3N to restore and sell. Unfortunatly the biggest price tag and 1/2 the value of the airplane is FWF.

Niiiiiiiiiiice, I like the wheel covers on the red Stearman, haven't seen that before. Lots of juice up front of the #20 N3N.

I'm not sure why I know this but Roy Rehm, the gentleman building the seven or eight Boeing 100/F4B/P-12's builds (or used to) new Bendix 30x5's.

I never really noticed before what a good looking airplane the N3N is - especially with a Pratt & Whitney up front.
