A question.

Tue Mar 04, 2008 10:39 pm

I have noticed, that there are moderators named for the different WIX sub-fora.

Why is it then, that when someone posts something that doesn't belong on a specific forum, there is usually someone -not a moderator- who believes that it is his job to indicate that "this posting does not belong here?"

The moderators should have the capabilities to move postings and threads to their corresponding forum, and the rest of us, should stick to posting stuff.

What's that? INCOMING!!!!!!!!!!! : )

Tulio-
I'm guessing that you may have started this thread because I (politely) told Nathan that his "Got Me a Nikkor 70-300mm" thread belongs in the "Off Topic" section of the forum. I could be wrong, you may be referring to someone else. Either way, I strongly disagree with your idea of us posting threads anywhere and letting the moderators move them to the corresponding forum. These guys have better things to do, I'm sure. It should be incumbent upon us to post things in the correct forum. It's not that difficult! I don't want to read about camera lenses or wade through a bunch of youtube links whenever I enter the "WIX Hangar" part of the forum. Am I way off base here?!

PS This was probably posted in the wrong forum...(kidding)

Scott and other moderators may not have time to check each and every post WIXers makes. So it would be up to every member to choose what section to post. As Pat said, this is not that difficult. In fact it’s not difficult at all. But then, what I have observed in the brief months I’ve been around here is that:

1) People may not know what is wrong or what is not. In the beginning I posted some wrong stuff in the WIX Hangar, got bashed and for the sake of sticking to the rules I began reading more of what Scott wrote in the Welcome section and in each and every section description. Although you can’t force people to read everything, neither can you force every moderator to analyze each post. This is not a commercial site. Basically what people must have is common sense. (Hellcat, where are you? :))

2) When we live in a community, virtual or not, we like to share our opinions. That’s a fact. And we like to read (or hear) of what others have to say. We don’t want a unilateral conversation. This is the ultimate and most obvious thing. In my observations what I have seen is that you get more feedback, despite the subject, if you post anything in the WIX Hangar section. And sometimes this proves right when people say they don’t have time to look at other sections or for them the other’s sections don’t exist.

And then we get back to Jack Cook. If any of you noticed, he substantially reduced his posts. I conclude that he is aware of rules and wants to do what is right, even if people begged him to continue. He wants to play by the book. I admire people like him.

I will not talk about HGU-WTFE, because I may think he has some disturbed agenda.

The only reason I post mostly on the WIX Hanger is cause this is where everyone checks in. The other boards seem to be rarely visited(I think some boards should be junked). So this is where the traffic is so that is why I posted it. Im sorry for starting a war. :? :(

Wed Mar 05, 2008 12:10 pm

Maybe many people don't frequent those boards because they don't want to see that stuff?

If you have dialup for instance, you probably aren't interested in seeing dozens of links to videos.

There is various option on moderating of the forum. major and most important are the work of the Administrator who have whole permission and posibilities. Level under are Moderators. They are capable to manage post within specific board. Rest are the members and their capabilities are to edit own post.

Other thing is the membergroup and permissions. Admin could create special member group not based on the post. With this group he could give apropriate permissions.

Admin could give various modification to the forum. For excample one of the most important is the active button "report to moderator" where visitor could click on it and report post to the moderator. Moderator get this report on his email and with direct link to the critical post.

Position of Admin and Moderators are respective and not everyone could do that job. They need specific skills, admin need to know also php and MySql, and some level of culture and knowledge. For excample on my forum moderator on board for combat airplane is gentleman from UK who is active RAF officer for a 30 years and he doing his job on forum perfect.

Well, here I go: Sorry if I will be all over the map, but I am having a bad sinus infection, and it is kicking my behind.

If someone takes or accepts the job as moderator -knowing that there is a large number of postings- then they should be able to moderate, that is, read, analyze and decide what goes where and move it accordingly. If it is too much work, then probably someone else should be offered or ask for the job. I AM NOT INTERESTED in becoming a moderator here.

I have plenty to do in three other forums, where I am a moderator.

Pat: Yes, and no. Your posting here, was the last one of such postings that did it for me.

I have seen others doing that at the KeyPublishing and other forums, and frankly, I believe that it is not my role as a member, to tell other members what to do or where to do it. That is AFAIK, the role of the moderator.

When I read someone chastising a member because his thread was not placed on the correct sub-forum, frankly, it makes me feel bad. Is placing a posting in the wrong place, such a bad thing? Is it an offense on the sense of order and propriety, that it must trigger a "it doesn't belong here" comment?

I am sure it is just me, but heck, the kid was happy that he got the camera lens that he wanted for so long, and then Pat, your reminder basically ruined the thread. I am sorry, but that's the way it makes me feel, and that's why I wrote my comment.

Now, some of us on this thread, seem to be thinking alongside the same lines of thought: Too many sub-forums.

When I visit WIX, I usually visit the Hangar, because that's where most of the interesting stuff (to me) takes place. I secondly visit the Off Topic section, and rarely any other sub-forums. It takes too long for me to check every single new posting.

I like warbirds and I like some other aspects of aviation more than others, and this dictates the places I visit.

I do not care for politics, religion or sports at WIX. If I am ever interested in any of those subjects, then there are web-sites with plenty of coverage for those subject matters.

And yes, whenever I see a posting that contains a link to a video, I usually close the posting, and go to something else.

Again, sorry for the rambling, let me blame it on the headache and the medications.

Tulio

Tulio-

I hope you're not implying that I chastised Nathan; maybe you should go back and re-read my initial post. I said something to the effect of "Congratulations" and "I have the same camera and lens...you'll enjoy it." I simply pointed out that his post was in the wrong area of the forum. Like Sean said, the moderators shouldn't have to scrutinize every single post on the forum if it's posted in the wrong area. It's OUR responsibility to post in the right place to begin with. What good are the rules of the forum if no one abides by them? I hope you get over your sinus infection soon, I suffer from them on a semi-regular basis. I feel your pain.

One has sinus and the other has a cold. I truly and deeply hate both. NEVER EVER approach me when I have one of these two. So I too feel your pain.

Jack Cook wrote:Actually not really...I've been extra busy, fighting off a cold and just plum tired.

Alrighty then! I'll stop admiring you! :D

Jack Cook wrote:I posted 1 photo in the photo section and it's floating belly up ie DOA

Yes, I was curious in what would happen but you posted just one P-51 image and I must confess it wasn't one the best images I saw. But it did DOA.

Pat wrote:It's OUR responsibility to post in the right place to begin with. What good are the rules of the forum if no one abides by them?

I still stick with my opinion and Pat’s.

Like everyone else in this world I don’t have much time either. So what I usually do is open every section that has new posts on individual tabs (Firefox or I.E.). I briefly look at the topic to see if it is interesting. Then I look who posted it. If one of these two conditions are met, then I open the post, read it and sometimes comment on it. If not, then I mark everything as read, close the tab and move to another one.

Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:26 pm

Again I am sorry for posting about the camera lens. It didnt get me upset or anything. So lets be friends. 8)

Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:43 pm

first off – lay off Jack – he is supposed to post his pictures here.
second off – the moderators here do an excellent job of treading the line between letting people have some room to express themselves and keep control. they shouldn't be doing daily patrols and moving posts that are mis-placed. in a lot of ways this forum is self-policed. look at how people are politely, yet firmly are trying to reel in saberdriver/hgsc whatever. so with regards to the self-policing, be responsible. if something is clearly not of major interest to the majority, post it in the appropriate forum. as far as nathan's post regarding his lens acquisition, it was clearly titled so anyone who wasn't interested could easily avoid it. as opposed to some of the more vaguely named threads here.

I'm sure the other moderators signed on to help lighten the load for Scott, not signing on for a fulll time job, which it really could be. On some days the posts are light, on others they can go for a page or two, not including a dozen or more replies to each posting; and I'm sure all of our moderators work full time. I can barely keep up with reading the "Hangar" section, let alone a few of the other forums, so imagine trying to sort through them, the majority would probably get yanked and thrown elsewhere. As time permits, those that are really off-topic, usually do seem to get relocated at a later date.
