Found Corsair in a barn

Okay, actually only a wing, but it was a LEFT OUTER WING! Also it was an early one with 60 gallon internal tank and had the remnants of the red insignia surround.



I put it in the paint hanger for now because the snow has just about sealed the barn at home till the spring thaw.



This is the inboard section of the Brewster left outer panel in my barn at home (cold storage). The photo shows almost the entire stub of this wing. So the newly found outer is very much in need. Note that it is a very early salmon primer color.

Wasn't the XF4U the only one with the wing tanks? IIRC, it also had a small bomb bay in each wing.

Off the top of my head, Most if not all F4U-1 & 1A's had the wing fuel tanks. Deleted in the F4U-1D, FG-1D for USN, but British MK IV (FG-1D) still had them.
IIRC bomb bay was XF4U only.

The Marine Corps Museums and FAA Museums Corsairs still have wing tanks installed.

The reddish primer is interesting. Was that unique to Brewster built Corsairs or Brewster in general? I believe this is the first time I've seen that color primer.

I don't believe that the salmon color was unique to Brewster. The outer wings were contracted out (to Briggs I believe) not Brewster. I have never seen them in salmon primer before though, so that's pretty interesting. I have always been curious about the unusual color, as I came across some NOS fuselage stations a few years back coated in the salmon primer.

Included is "Salmon", which it is noted, was used by
Vought on the F4U.
