Pic Request: B-17 Wheel Well

Thu Feb 14, 2008 2:29 am

Hi All,

I'm working on a B-17 model, and of course the wheel wells are just big empty holes. I'd like to add some bulkheads and such to "busy them up." I've got lots of B-17 books and have shot hundreds of detail pics over the years, but none that really clearly show the structure inside the wheel wells. Can anybody help me out?

Thanks,

Steve

Here are some shots of the right gear well of the Collings B-17G. The left will be a mirror image.

This is the aft outboard area. You can see the stainless steel exhaust shroud in the lower left. Cables are for engine controls.

Aft inboard. Red firebottle is not WWII vintage. The black part is the oil tank for engine number three. This tank takes up a large portion of the inboard side of the gear well.

Inboard side. Shafts, 90 degree gear box, limit switch box are parts of the emergency landing gear system.

Image

Forward upper. You can see the black motor and gear box and the silver jack screw for the right main landing gear. Relays are for gear motor control.
