I saw on the pony board that last week, Millie G had indeed taken to the air. Today, just surfing through several sites and pulled up Marks site and low and behold on the front page is this beautiful Mustang in the air. Those 55th FG markings look very nice. Like to see all of the 55FG Mustangs in the air at the same time. Maybe not as many as the "Blue Nose" crowd, but certainly gaining! I digress, but the Mustang along with several other Mustangs are for sale. I noticed that Fowlers F4U-7 and Rued's TBM have "sale pending"..... any thoughts on who the buyers are???? Alan

Admittedly, that is one gorgeous Mustang (sort of a redundant statement anyway, isn't it?).

What interested me was this statement:

The aircraft was built from the ground up using new skins, longerons, rebuilt control surfaces, cables, tubing, wiring, spars and other major components.

That gets back to the discussions we were having 6 months ago over what constitutes a "restoration" versus a "replica".

I think this is the one 'claimed ' to be an original 'Millie G' ..because the tailcone was found to have an ID number from one of Gillers' aircraft....that was in fact lost over France in 1944 . So at some time a part was switched and ended up on this ex South American example ...doesn't make it a' Millie G' in my eyes...the only 'real Millie G' survivor has been recently refurbished and is back on a pole , awaiting a purpose built museum to be constructed in the Dom.Rep.

I believe that Dick Phillips (Mr Mustang Historian!!) recently noted over on the mustangsmustangs.net board that there are 3 or 4 aircraft that can or are being legitimately being claimed as the 'real' Millie G.

The Dominican airframe appears to have a serial traceable to being the real thing, but you know how it goes with serial numbers and airframes sent to Carribean/Central/South American Air Forces!

I have a list of all M.G. aircraft , including the P-38s , so will dig it out and post it . I was also in contact with General Giller about the restoration of his aircraft in the Dom.Rep , and he still has his log books detailing his aircraft, and their fates . No doubt that 'bits' could find there way on to other machines after operational repairs , but a 'bit' doesn't make an I.D. !

My father, Lt. John D. Stearns, flew a P-51D called "Delivery Boy" in 1944 and very early 1945. This is the same serial number (44-15701) referred to for "Millie G." This plane was originally flown by Lt. George Contos. Both he and my dad were members of the 352nd FG, 486th FS stationed in Bodney, England. So at one time, it seems this aircraft was in fact a Bluenoser.

Does anyone have any other facts?
