Very Interesting Link...With regard to the P-61, has this been recovered I wonder. It appeared that a lot of it has been cut away for scrap. Interesting.

Yep, thats our P-61 alright. The pictures of it still on the mountain were taken before the natives dropped the last tree .... right across the radio operator's position. A mistake that cost us tons of time and effort. Luckily the booms and tail were already removed and pulled away. Pap said he was so disgusted he wanted to leave it on the hill with the tree on it.

The other pictures were taken at the drop site for the helicopter, I can't remember the name of the village. From there, the pieces were crated and then trucked to Jayapura to be loaded on the ship. Pap has a giant map of the island on the wall in his office. He points to the map and tells stories of going off with native guides finding anti-aircraftguns and an overgrown Japanese airfield. A few of his favorite pieces from his trips over there is a GI canteen and old saki (sp?) bottle from an AA gun.

Here's the before and after pictures of the tree incident. They were taken off MAAM.org

Cool link! A lot of those pictures are from a long time ago. Some of them were taken during W.W. II, all the way through to modern times. Many of the planes have been recovered also. I believe some of the Japanese stuff is currently restored and/or recovered. It looks like the Zero, possibly Tony are all from Babo and were recovered in the early 90's. The Val is the one currently at the Nimitz Musueum in Texas. There are a few pictures from Silver Hill from the Smithsonian as well.

Man, what I wouldn't give to find a Stuka in that condition, with it's tail up in the air. Obviously that was a war time picture.

It is wonderful to see this 61 being restored :D , You Dad is a better man than I would have been back in 91  , I would have probably gone Postal... on the extreme side of Postal  , go through all that and have a frickin' tree dropped across her  .....yeah, someone would have became a victim  . BUt now I am older, and realize, that I probably would still go Ba-List-TIC!! :D

that pic of that aircraft underwater with the swept back wings and the reverse engines what is that?

And did they recover the flying boats that were sitting in the water? and where was it?

It took me about an hour over lunch to look at all those pics. I particularly like the Connie playground and the Connie house.
