Allied aircraft captured by the Axis and flown

Were there any P-51's, P-38's, P-47's that the Germans captured and flew? I believe there were, but I cannot remember. Also any Corsairs, F4F's, F6F's etc. captured by the Japanese and flown?

OK ... here's more, kinda cool stuff. Who would dare paint their airplane these colors today? ..... other than no one, but how crazy would that be to show up at an airshow in some of these markings. ... lolol

They even had the P-51 on the latest Dogfights on the history Channel. A P-51 Pilot was ready to strike and noticed it was a P-51 and then as it was closer, it had German markings on it.

That OD painted P-51B sure shows why there were early recognition problems. It does resemble a 109.

Great pics, especially of a/c captured in the Philippines and Java. Too bad the text is in Japanese, but it's relativlely easy to figure out where the pictures were taken.

There is a pretty good article on three B-17s captured by the Japanese in the May 1973 ( Vol.9 #5) issue of "Air Classics" by Robert C. Mikesh. pp 12 et seq.

The D was 40-3095, one of the E's was 41-24671; according to the article.

Several interesting picture in the article. It also states that at least two of them were present near the end of hostilities and that they had "disappeared" before the occupation forces got there.

The book I mentioned above has a number of pics of those B-17s. The E model you refer to was 41-2471. A bit of trivia, 40-3095 was the ship that Colin Kelly flew to the Phiippines with the 14 BS in Sept. of '41, and remained his until the the arrival of the 19th BG in November.

German markings would be interesting to see.

I think it would be interesting to see a Spit or replica/hybrid completed as EN830, although to many it might be considered sacrilege. It doesn't harm the looks of the Spitfire and would not be impossible to do.
