Site Donations

Wed Jan 02, 2008 5:16 pm

I was recently asked about what the money that was donated to the site was used for and what would be appropriate. So I'm going to see what the community thinks. This is a serious question so the obvious answer of hookers and beer are not helpful ;)

and more importantly, what would be an inappropriate use of funds.

And if you don't want your opinion public, PM me.

I was thinking we could use the funds to update the forum area to a format similar to Airshow Buzz. It's very user friendly and photos can be uploaded without having to use a host site like photo bucket. I know it can be toublesome to upload photo's here.

Keep up the great work Scott & Ryan!

I'd say that the funds should be used to make sure that the guys behind the forum, who put up with all of the junk, personal problems, and catfights, should be able to keep up their good work...

Don't change the photo-upload format like ASB. I like to post a lot (I mean alot) of pics during my posts, and ASB allows like 3 or 4 pics.

I have no concept of what it costs to run a web site, and imagine that there are others like me without a clue..It would be interesting to have some insite as to what you guys put up with, monitary and the frustration level. This way, I could better answer the question you have proposed. Thanks for providing the quality site you have, and I hope it continues well after the fat lady stops singing

Has they say "To many cooks spoil the soup" .
Scott, you're doing fine on your own. Between you and Ryan
you've got it handled without any help from the peanut gallery.
Use whatever however you see fit!

 I want to point out that donations for last year (for WIX) were roughly $500. We might want to think about a smaller plane... something in balsa... :D

One theoretical use of some of the donations would be to get my butt to Chino this year to cover the air show for the site. Would you all think that inappropriate? Just trying to get a feel for the attitude towards things, I don't want to do something and have people get pissed.

Right now the costs are down due to the ISP/hosting competition. They used to be much higher. I would not be able to have the traffic this high even three years ago. I figure I've dumped about $10K into the site over the years. The most expensive years running as high as $1500. The google ads offset the majority of the current costs, but our future projects will be eating that up and more. And this doesn't include the 20-30 hours a week I spend, nor the time that Ryan or the mods spend on the site, which is done for free.

My dream would be to pull in enough revenue from ads, donations, or whatever to be able to do this full time. I will never make this a pay site or have annoying pop-up ads. I had to allow the current ads or else close the site down. But banner ads will be the limit.

If you would like to see the place grow then feel free to donate if your comfortable with that. Use the Tip Jar if thats better (If just the registered members used the tip jar we could make this one helluva site) or if your are using amazon, start your search through one of the amazon links in the site, that helps us generate funds as well.

All this is strictly voluntary. And if you want your donation used for a specific purpose then just make a note on the paypal form.

Let me know your opinions of this and anything else about the site.

Well Scott- I am moderator on the largest forum in Serbia, Burek, and my friend Ivan from Belgrade, pay every month 500 USD for the hosting of this site. Forum have 500 thousand of members [you have read corectly, half of million]. This is 6000 USD every year. Average montly pay in Serbia is some 200 USD. So is the real problem 1500 USD per year for the owner who live and work in USA? Anyway this forum deserve every respect and support but is it real problem finances for the same?

Put donation link with direct PayPal payment. From my side I could give you few color profiles for online sale. PayPal don't work in Serbia and I can not help in other way.
