I believe it's being (or has been) repaired after being damaged by Katrina. I saw it in the hangar about five weeks before the storm and it looked quite nice.

I wonder if you would like to tell that face to face with some of the people that busted their asses to restore it. I know for a fact that there are a few of them on this site. Some of you need to get off of your high horses of looking down on static aircraft. It is getting really old.

Just not this time and not this place seems to fit everything and everytime we talk about a static aircraft here. The minute someone mentions static you get response like, "It's now just a replica, it is murdered, it is a shame, it's not a real airplane anymore" Yeah it gets kind of old. AS USUAL I AM WRONG? WTF does that mean?

Mustangdriver, if it can make you feel any better, I too feel that a static restoration is much better than no restoration at all !

Of course, I rejoyce everytime an old warbird returns to the air but realistically, with the ever increasing costs of doing so, any nicely done static warbird is a win against oblivion in my book.

I believe that this was originally a flying Corsair when it was acquired by the Battleship Alabama. There was a Mustang that sat across the walkway from it. Both aircraft were subjected to decades of salt air and moisture as they sat just a few feet from the shoreline of Mobile Bay. I don't know the context of the picture as to time of its display, it might also have been taken during the repaint and conversion to AU-1 configuration.Both aircraft were kept in respectable shape externally but I'm sure that internally it couldn't have been good. The damage caused by the Katrina storm surge is slowly being repaired but the Mustang still has wing damage and the tail was ripped off. Hats off to Mike Thompson and his crew for the job they are doing with , as usual, too few rescources.

For those of you that are wondering, the flavor of the morning is cherry !

FYI here is the latest picture I have of this corsair. Photo was
taken at Pensacola NAS about 8 weeks ago. It was being crated
and beign prepared for shipment to the USS Midway for
restoration and display. Note that is has the incorrect serial
number of it.
