hmmm...kind of looks like it could've been in VMF-225. Note the barber-pole spinner and the squadron markings on the cowl. They were flying -4's when this picture was taken on May 31, 1947 at Philadelphia, PA. It was taken by Dave Lucabaugh via Jim Sullivan.

This shot was in Naval Aviation News back in the 70s. The "WOO" is appropiated. A nugget Ensign was flying it in from the beach and messed it up a bit for the CAG

Yep, although they make no mention of a Ensign flying it.

Did they ever tell the editor which way it fell?

Going through those NAN pdf mags is good reading. Wouldn't mind get the volumes on cd.

Anyone interested in NAN or Approach might try their local State University, especially if they had ROTC on Campus.
I used to go into the "stacks" at the UCONN library and read them all the time when I was in school. Great stuff and all bound!

That "nugget Ensign" was my father-in-law, Jack Hester. He still has a 9mm reel of the incident, along with a VHS copy. It toppled back onto its landing gear and he immidiately jumped out in case it caught fire. He went on to make one cruise on the Boxer with VF-23 in F4U-4s (arriving off Korea just in time for Inchon), then returned to the States where VF-23 re-equipped with F9F-2s. He made his second cruise (still with VF-23) aboard the Princeton in 1951, then finished out as a gunnery instructor in T-6s. He retired from IBM in 1987.

By the way, the tail code is "M" for Midway Air Group (Air Group 2).

Thanks for the good intel and welcome aboard WIX.

Did your FIL ever say whether or not that Corsair went on to fly again?

Also what cause the event?

If you ever get the chance to upload some of you FIL pictures and film they would be well recieved here? :D

Thanks

The damage was apparently fairly minor, so I'm sure it was repaired. He said that the LSO assumed that the CAG was actually in the plane, so I got the impression that the LSO may have expected Jack to be able to do a better job of correcting than he was ready for.
