Recent Treasure hunt

Hi all, I got back from a week of working and in my "off" time went and scrounged around an old Aircraft dump site. Thought I would post a couple pics that i took as well as what I brought home with me

Was hoping for Boomerang parts and although not dissapointed with what I got a lot of it is US aircraft ( i think)

I'm trying to ID two parts in particular ...one is an ammo chute with the part number 128533 ISS1 and inspection stamp M2V
another has MSV80

the other piece looks to be a stainless steel ammo container lid with a grey/blue paint on it part number 112794V3 and inspection stamp is an L? with a 1 slightly above the base of the L
anyway have a look if anyone wants to have a go at guessing aircraft parts ..be my guest

i'm in the process of sand blasting and repainting the parts. This has cleaned up some of them really well but unfortunatly rust has destroyed some of the prt numbers.

2nd pic down up the back look like a couple of P40 ammo chutes as they look similar to some that we have recovered from Oakey last year.Great find..Nothing like a bit of hard yakka and recovering some bits.Also good to get in now before the Aussie summer really hits.

It's funny to me that anybody could find taht stuff of value. But then again I dig in the dirt to find little dodads people dumped in the trash 3500 years ago lol!

Hell, i'd take those pieces home hang them on the wall and brag to everyone I own a Boomerang.

OOOOH trust me it was hot enough out there.......out in the middle of Qld nothing but dirt,sun and flies . Got blisters on both feet from carrying this stuff a collective 30+ kms through that terrain. The last hump was carrying the sheet metal parts and I think THAT was what killed me...was stopping almost every 10 mins and having a 20 min break hahahaha

I couldn't wait to get back into my air-conditioned car for the drive back to civilisation if you could call it that and then onto Townsville the day I left (3am) it started to pour down and that heralded in the beginning of the "wet season" so i am glad I got out before that as it would have been shear torture to have to contend with that as well

and loving every minute of it! Nathan, don't get me wrong--I love looking at it it but I have no idea what it means. On the other hand, if you hand me a projectile opoint I can usually tell you who made it, when, for what purpose, and by that I can often tell you how they lived, who they were, and why they didn't have Boomrangs!

We each have our true loves, and they're each special to US. God bless all those yahoos who find joy in digging what others think is trash, out of the trash heap of history, and save it for our grandchildren

Okay, after sand blasting a couple of them and priming these are the results(with an equivalent before piece), i've also included some closeups of the part numbers that show...still need ID on all pieces. I'm guessing the chutes are possibly P-39 but if some learned wixer knows better please feel free to write in.

I really envy you going out & actually doing this treasure hunting!.. make sure you do something positive with it.

I used to do this myself years ago but unfortunately haven't had time the last few years..... it's amazing what you can find if you are prepared to spend many hours researching & "getting out there" with a shovel. I am sure there are a few more discoveries to be made here in Australia if people are interested enough?

I am pretty sure there is a P-40 main U/C gear segment amongst your haul.

Good eyes you are absolutely correct ...I believe the part you are referring to is part of the pivot gear on a P-40..there were another 6+ out there and I didn't have the room to collect too much. Most of the non-boomer gear will probably end up being swapped for Boomerang bits *fingers crossed* I'm going to have a go at reverse engineering some parts before that happens though.

Sorry to deflate you, but none of the items are P40. I have restored one and am familiar with all parts. They are very similar, but not the same. The leg geare segment do not have a hole in the centre. P40 part numbers start with 87- or 75-.

Good on you for picking the stuff up though.

the 72 number I believe is Vultee Vengeance

I am not familiar with vultee parts, but the part number seems correct. I find this site useful for identifying parts:
