I'd bet some of our B-17 experts here could figure it out.

Complete airframe, cold/ snowy environment, post war markings... hmmm

I'd like to see a more current picture. That looks like an old one. I could only hope to believe the aircraft is still in that good of condition. It would be spectacular however if it is.

it's amazing how this Flying Fortress has so to speak flown under the radar for possible future recovery.

Makes one wonder what else is out there that we don't know about.

I look forward to hearing more about this recovery. I hope it's covered as well as the GL's Lake Murray B-25 recovery was.

i'm assuming this is an air / sea rescue version?? if so i wonder how the life boat faired as to survival.

My guess is that it is soon after the aircraft crashed. You can make out the skid marks. Also usually after time sand, vegetation, or whatever the surrounding terrain is would tend to build up on the side of the aircraft due to wind, and natural causes. It also appears to be out of a newspaper or similar as you can see the moire pattern.

If it is an honest-to-goodness SB-17, there there are a couple of places that came up after some googling. There's a wreck around Olympic Peninsula in Washington, but it was pretty well broken up. SB-17's were also used early on in Korea, but I didn't see anything about specific airframes that were lost.

Here is what I can make out from the picture:

Looks like snow.

Looks like it's maybe facing north easterly from the shadow (but guessing)

Stars and Bars say that the belly landing is after 1947.

Possibly fuel starvation....lots of straight prop blades


Anybody see other clues?

That pic looks photo shopped. the nose is damaged as if it stood up on its nose.The shadows look wrong as well. The setting does not look right.
