I took care of this airplane a little when I worked at Galvin Flying at KBFI in the early 90s. Just fueled it and pushed it in and out of the hangar.

I always wondered where his "crash" moniker came from....

And he keeps the picture of the result in the breast pocket of his flight suit to remind himself not to do it again.

Has I remember the story, Crash was a young pilot serving in the ANG. Taking his family on vacation he stuffed them in a Piper Tri-pacer and then proceeded to overload it with fuel and baggage. Going over a mountain range he tried to clear a 8500' peak and made it to about 8450'. This if I recall was about a 100' day. His ANG squadron apointed him has their chief mountain flying expert and his wife (she's a sweet heart BTW) has never been off the ground since :!: He does carry a photo of the wreck in his pocket. I've flown with Crash a lot in the T-28 & TBM has he a very good stick :!:

To see the picture its rather amazing that they walked away from it. As an aside, one year the Cascade Warbirds were roasting Crash at an airshow, and being that Mrs. Crash wouldn't fly with him, the squadron recruited us in the HU-16 to fly to KBFI to pick her up and take her to the airshow. I'm pretty sure that is the only time she has ever flown since the crash.
