Actually Mudge Jack Ilfrey scored 2 kills in Europe.
In Africa he downed 5.5 but wasn't the first ace. The
title belongs to Jack's good friend Virgil Smith of the
14th FG who was KIA shortly thereafter
Seen here are (seated) L-R, Joe Forster (475th FG, Pacific), Art Jeffrey (479th FG, Europe), John Loisel (475th FG), Joel Owens (1st FG, North Africa/Italy), Darryl Welch (1st FG). Standing in the rear are P-38 aces Niall Castle and Herb Ross, and Navy F6F Hellcat aces Ted Crosby and Ralph Folz.
OOOPS... Sorry Jack...(and troops) Just re-read that portion of his book and you are (to no-one's surprise) correct. The book actually says "One of the first..." DUH...my bad.
